Drip Drop

Broad Question:

How Fabric type affects a cloths drying time.

Specific Question:

Does fabric type affect the drying time.

Hypothesis:

I think spandex will dry fastest and denim will dry slowest.

Variables

Independent Variable:

Fabric type

Dependent Variable:

Drying time

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

The amount of water used

General Plan

I'll cut out 7 pieces of fabric on all the different fabrics and ill poor the same amount of water on all the fabrics and see how long they take to dry.

Potential Problems And Solutions

  • I don't have enough fabric.
  • I could by more of that fabric.

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

  • I could cut myself with scissors.

Detailed Procedure

  • Get the different fabrics.
  • Cut out each fabric type into 4x4 squares.
  • Measure each piece of fabric when its dry and write down the measurements.
  • Poor 1/4 of a cup of warm water on each square.
  • Set a timer for every 10 to 15 minuets.
  • Place the pieces of fabric on a hard surface.
  • Measure each fabric type and each square every 15 minuets
  • Continue to measure the fabrics until they are the same weight as they were when they where dry.

Results

All Raw Data

How do your results benefit society of science in general?

Conclusion

My conclusion is that Spandex and Nylon dry fastest. Spandex and Nylon dried fastest because they are thinner and because they don't absorb as much water as denim and cotton. I also found that plaid and denim dry the slowest because they tend to absorb more liquids because they are thicker.

Discussion

My data showed that the fabrics that are thinner dry quicker but the fabrics that are thicker dry slower. I also found that the fabric types that weighed very little dried fastest and the fabrics that weighed more dried slower. I don't think my experiment contained any errors but i did have one problem with it the first time i tried the experiment, the first time i tried the experiment i didn't quiet set the timer correctly and it messed my entire project so i tried it the next day correctly. The relationship between the independent and dependent variables are very strong. We could use this information for people who are just learning how to do their own laundry, they would know a general amount of time it would take for their laundry to dry. My experiment could have improved by me not having a time limit and

Abstract

my science fair project was about how does type affect the drying time.I figured out how to meusier the weight of the cloth by weighing the piece of fabric when it was dry and then i pored 10 ml of water on the piece of fabric that was in a beaker. I then set a timer for ten to fifteen minuets.
